Pain During Exercise

You do not want pain during exercise!

No Pain FOR Gains

You’ve probably heard the expression “no pain no gain” but is pain something you want to feel while you are exercising? You probably want to be sore the next day or two, which tells you that your muscles have been working, but you do not want to feel pain. If you experience pain you could be injuring yourself and if the pain gets too bad there is a good chance you will not continue to exercise. Once you stop exercising it is hard to get back into the routine.

So what should you do if you do feel pain while exercising?

First, you should make sure you are doing the exercise in good form, watching yourself in a mirror could help with that. If that does not help alleviate your pain then you should stop doing that exercise. If you are taking a class and the instructor is available to talk to, you should mention the pain that you are experiencing so that the instructor could offer you a different exercise.

It’s OK to exercise uneven

When you have an injury or are recovering from an injury, surgery, etc., you can still exercise as long as you have been cleared by a doctor. It is OK to use two different size dumbbells, going lighter or no weight at all on the side that is injured or recovering. You should reduce the weight until you can perform the movement without the pain. Put your focus on squeezing your muscles while moving through the exercises, you do not have to have weights in your hands to use your muscles. As the injured side recovers, you will eventually build your strength back up until you are again even with your weights.

Listening to your body is the key to keeping yourself healthy and moving

If an injury slows you down be sure to keep your mind stimulated, and keep whatever part of your body moving that you can. If you have a lower-body injury focus on upper body exercises and vice versa. Remember a body in motion stays in motion, a body that stops moving has a very hard time starting to move again. Keep on keeping on is the best way to be healthy BEFORE you NEED to be healthy!
