Slow and steady works for hare and turtle at finish line.

Slow and Steady Works

Slow and Steady with Exercise

There is a time and place for moving fast when it comes to exercise, like when you are running, doing a HIIT workout, or maybe when you are keeping up with the beat of the music in Fitness Drumming.  In those situations speed is important.

When it comes to toning/building muscles it’s not about going fast. You should be focused on the muscles you are using, squeezing those muscles while moving at a slow, steady pace.  Remember to USE your muscles because when you go too fast you simply move your muscles and this may not get you to the goals you are seeking to reach.

Slow and Steady with Weight Loss

I cannot stress enough how important slow and steady weight loss is!  You’ve all seen it, or maybe it’s been you, a lot of weight is lost very quickly, using extreme measures only to gain it all back once you stop the extreme behavior.

Setting a long-term goal, using 1/2 to 1 pound per week as your goal will give you longer-lasting results.  Better yet, set aside a piece of clothing that does not fit you well and try it on every 3 – 4 weeks to check your progress.  When you make small changes, that you can sustain for the long run, you are making lifestyle changes instead of doing extremes that only last until you reach a goal.  Making small changes makes it easier to keep up with your new habits!

In Life

Slow down, disconnect, and have some “me” time every once and a while.  We are all too busy, between work, family, and a long to-do list we seldom slow down and take time for ourselves.  Doing something you enjoy, that you want to do not have to do, like a fun hobby is a good place to start, but be careful not to put pressure on yourself to do that hobby.  Get out of the house for a walk, just because, or maybe spend a night away in a hotel, do something that allows you to truly relax.  Stress is harmful!

Plan ahead, make lists to keep track of important to-do’s, and don’t bite off more than you can chew.  The word NO needs to be used when you already have too much on your plate, and don’t feel guilty about using it, your health is too important.

Slow and steady fit into so many aspects of our lives.  Slow and steady will help us be healthy BEFORE we NEED to be healthy!
